A Tale of Synapse: The Chaos Theories is a 2D platformer and puzzle game for Nintendo Switch in which the rules of maths and logic are your tools. Developed by French studio Souris-Lab and published by Tesura Games, it follows two heroes, Sci and Néro, through a dreamlike world called Héméide, and you can play it alone or with a second player on the same console.

What Kind of Game A Tale of Synapse Is
Nintendo’s listing describes A Tale of Synapse: The Chaos Theories as a mix of platformer and puzzle game that blends abstract art and science. You use the rules of the universe, and the elements that make it up, to help the Synapsians become open-minded. Along the way you develop your synapses to gain new abilities, solve puzzles and fight enemies.
The puzzles lean on equations and logical thinking rather than reflexes alone. Nintendo’s listing sums it up as solving equations with your sense of logic. The genres it is filed under are puzzle, platformer, adventure and education, which gives a fair idea of the tone: a calm, thoughtful game rather than a fast action title.
Sci and Néro: Solo or Local Co-op
The two heroes cooperate to make progress, and A Tale of Synapse lets one player handle both or lets a second player take over. Nintendo lists 1 to 2 players in single-system mode, so co-op happens on one Switch, and it notes that multiplayer needs one compatible controller per player. A pair of Joy-Con split between two people covers that.
There is no online multiplayer listed for the game. That makes it a good fit for a parent and child, siblings or friends sharing the sofa, and less of a fit for anyone who wants to play together from different homes.
4 Worlds, 45 Levels and 10+ Hours
The publisher’s figures for A Tale of Synapse are 4 magical worlds, 45 levels with puzzles and more than 10 hours of gameplay. The art is colourful 2D, with abstract shapes, geometry and symbols drawn into the scenery, and the game has its own original soundtrack that sets the mood of Héméide.
The Switch version runs in TV, tabletop and handheld modes, so you can play on the big screen or take it with you. Nintendo lists the download size as 2.5 GB.
Languages, Rating and Release
Nintendo lists English, Spanish, French and German as supported languages; Arabic is not offered, so players need to be comfortable reading English or one of the other three. Nintendo’s European listing shows a PEGI 7 rating. The case in our photos carries an older provisional PEGI 3 mark printed before the final rating, which is why the two differ.
The game came out in Europe on 30 June 2021 as a download, with the physical Game Card edition following on 16 July 2021. The copy we sell is the physical Game Card in a Nintendo Switch case, with the Tesura Games logo on the front.
Who This Is Not For
A Tale of Synapse is a slow, puzzle-led game, so players who want fast combat, a long open world or online play will find it limited. More than 10 hours is a modest length for its price, and with no Arabic language option, younger children who do not read English may need help with the text.
Anyone who expected a point-and-click mystery should also look elsewhere: this is a side-on 2D platformer where you jump, move and solve puzzles in real time.
