The Apple iPhone 17 512GB Black is the Japanese-market model of the standard iPhone 17, in Black with the larger of its two storage options. Apple lists the A19 chip, a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, a 48MP Fusion main camera and a 48MP Fusion ultra wide camera, an 18MP Center Stage front camera and up to 30 hours of video playback. The single most important point before you order: this model is eSIM only, with no physical SIM tray, so your mobile line has to be on eSIM. The sections below cover what that means, then the display, chip, cameras and battery.
Table of Contents
Japan version and dual eSIM
Apple Japan lists the iPhone 17 as eSIM only, with no support for a physical SIM card. Two eSIM lines can be active at the same time, and Apple says eight or more eSIMs can be stored on the phone, which helps if you travel and add local data plans. UAE operators offer eSIM, so ask yours to move your number to eSIM before the phone arrives and it will work from the first day. Japanese models also add FeliCa for Japanese contactless cards, which you will not need here. As an imported unit, the Apple iPhone 17 512GB Black is covered by a 1-year warranty from Totot.
6.3-inch ProMotion display and design
The front of the Apple iPhone 17 512GB Black is a 6.3-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display at 2622 by 1206 pixels and 460 ppi, with ProMotion adaptive refresh up to 120Hz and an Always-On mode. Apple rates it at 1000 nits typical, 1600 nits peak for HDR content and 3000 nits peak outdoors, down to 1 nit at minimum. Ceramic Shield 2 covers the glass, with an anti-reflective coating. The Apple iPhone 17 512GB Black measures 149.6 by 71.5 by 7.95 mm and weighs 177 g. It is rated IP68 under IEC 60529 to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes, and Apple notes that liquid damage is not covered by its warranty.
A19 chip, N1 wireless and 512GB
The A19 in the Apple iPhone 17 512GB Black has a 6-core CPU with two performance and four efficiency cores, a 5-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a 16-core Neural Engine. Wireless runs through the Apple N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, plus Thread, 5G and a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. Storage on this unit is 512GB; Apple notes that the system and built-in apps use roughly 12 to 24GB of that. For anyone who shoots a lot of 4K Dolby Vision video, the 512GB Apple iPhone 17 Black leaves far more room than the 256GB model before you need to offload clips.
Dual 48MP Fusion cameras
The Apple iPhone 17 512GB Black rear system pairs a 48MP Fusion main camera (26 mm, f/1.6, sensor-shift stabilisation) with a 48MP Fusion ultra wide camera (13 mm, f/2.2, 120-degree field of view). There is no separate telephoto lens; instead the main camera crops to a 12MP 2x telephoto mode at 52 mm, which Apple calls optical quality. Apple quotes 2x optical zoom in and out, a 4x optical zoom range and up to 10x digital zoom. The front camera is an 18MP Center Stage camera at f/1.9 with autofocus. Video records up to 4K Dolby Vision at up to 60 fps, Cinematic mode up to 4K at 30 fps, and slow motion at 1080p up to 240 fps.
Battery and charging
Apple rates the Apple iPhone 17 512GB Black at up to 30 hours of video playback and up to 27 hours of streamed video; real results depend on brightness, signal and apps. Wired fast charging reaches about 50% in around 20 minutes with a 40W or higher adapter and a USB-C cable. With a MagSafe charger and a 30W or higher adapter it reaches about 50% in around 30 minutes, and both MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging go up to 25W. The box holds the phone and a 1 m USB-C cable only, with no power adapter. The USB-C port carries USB 2 data speeds, up to 480Mb/s, and supports DisplayPort output.
Who This Is Not For
Skip the Apple iPhone 17 512GB Black if you want to keep a physical SIM card, because this Japan version is eSIM only. It is a weak fit if you regularly copy large video files to a computer by cable, since the USB-C port runs at USB 2 speed, up to 480Mb/s. It has no dedicated telephoto lens, so if you shoot sports or wildlife at a distance, the iPhone 17 Pro is the better tool. There is no charger in the box. And if you only keep photos in iCloud, 512GB may be more than you need, and the 256GB model costs less.
