Description

The instax mini Evo Cinema is a hybrid: a small digital camera with an instax printer built into the same body. You shoot digitally, look at the result on the screen, decide whether it deserves to be on film, and only then spend a sheet. Every specification below is taken from FUJIFILM’s own product page and the official user’s guide for model FI041.

FUJIFILM instax mini Evo Cinema hybrid instant camera in black

Hybrid Means Digital First, Print Second

A traditional instant camera commits a sheet of film to every press of the shutter. The instax mini Evo Cinema does not. It captures to memory first, at 1920 x 2560 pixels, using a 1/5-inch CMOS sensor with a primary colour filter and roughly 5 million effective pixels. The lens is fixed at a 28 mm equivalent focal length with an F2.0 aperture, it focuses from 10 cm to infinity, ISO runs automatically between 100 and 1600, and the shutter covers 1/4 to 1/8000 second.

That order matters more than any single number on the sheet. Because the instax mini Evo Cinema lets you choose what to print, a pack of film lasts as long as your judgement does rather than as long as your shutter finger. Film is a consumable, it is sold separately, and it is the ongoing cost of owning this camera rather than a one-off.

The Eras Dial: Ten Looks, Not a Hundred Effects

The large dial on top of the instax mini Evo Cinema is the Eras Dial, and it carries ten settings: 1930, 1940, 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020. Each applies a look associated with that decade of photography. A separate Degree Control Dial sets how strongly the effect is applied, and a Frame Switch turns a matching decorative frame on or off, so the ten looks are a range rather than ten fixed presets.

It is worth being precise here, because this camera is easy to confuse with FUJIFILM’s earlier hybrid. The instax mini Evo Cinema is built around ten era effects with adjustable intensity. It is not built around a grid of separate lens effects and film effects combined into a hundred variations. If dozens of independently mixable filters are what you are after, that is a different model.

CINE Mode and Fifteen-Second Clips

A switch on the body of the instax mini Evo Cinema moves between STILL and CINE. In CINE mode the instax mini Evo Cinema records video, up to 15 seconds per clip, divided into segments, with the Eras effects applied as you shoot. Standard video size is 600 x 800. Select the 2020 effect and the camera can additionally save a 1080 x 1440 high-quality version to the memory card. Video is recorded as MP4 at 24p.

The instax mini Evo Cinema can also print from a recorded clip. The print carries a QR code, and scanning it with a phone plays back the original video. That is the genuinely unusual thing this camera does: a paper print that points back at moving footage instead of standing alone.

Printing: Speed, Resolution and the Film You Have to Buy

Printing is a deliberate, mechanical act. You lift the Print Lever and rotate it 90 degrees counter-clockwise, and the instax mini Evo Cinema pushes out a sheet in about 16 seconds. Choosing instax-Rich Mode, which prints with more saturated colour than the alternative Natural Mode, adds roughly 7 seconds to that. Print resolution is 25 dots per millimetre by 12.5 dots per millimetre, which FUJIFILM also states as 635 x 318 dpi with a 40 x 80 micrometre dot pitch.

On a full charge FUJIFILM rates the instax mini Evo Cinema at approximately 100 prints. The film is FUJIFILM instax mini Instant Film and it is sold separately: no film comes with the camera, and you will keep buying it for as long as you keep printing. Treat the film as the real running cost and the body as the one-time purchase, and the numbers make sense before you order rather than after.

Screen, Storage, Battery and the App

The instax mini Evo Cinema screen is a 1.54-inch TFT colour LCD with approximately 170,000 dots. It is there to frame and review, not to edit on. Internal memory holds roughly 50 still images or about 10 video clips, which is why a card matters quickly: the instax mini Evo Cinema takes microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards up to 256 GB.

The battery is an internal lithium-ion cell that cannot be removed or swapped, and a full charge takes about 2 to 3 hours over USB Type-C. That port is for charging only. Bluetooth 5.4 Low Energy and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi on 802.11 b/g/n connect the camera to the instax mini Evo app for iOS and Android, so you can send a photo from the phone to the camera and print it. In the box are a USB Type-C cable, a hand strap, a viewfinder attachment, a grip attachment and the user’s guide.

Who This Is Not For

This is not a serious digital camera. A 1/5-inch sensor at roughly 5 megapixels exists to feed a credit-card-sized print, not your photo library, and the files look soft the moment you view them full screen. If digital image quality is the goal, the phone already in your pocket beats the instax mini Evo Cinema comfortably and does not need film.

The instax mini Evo Cinema is also not for anyone who dislikes recurring costs, because instax mini film is bought pack after pack and none is included. The battery cannot be swapped out on a long day, so when it is flat you stop. At about 270 g and 39.4 x 132.5 x 100.1 mm this is not a pocketable camera. And the flash reaches only about 50 cm to 1.5 m, so it will not light a room or reach people at the far end of a table.

FAQ

Is film included with the instax mini Evo Cinema?

No. FUJIFILM instax mini Instant Film is a consumable and is sold separately, so add a pack to your order if you want to print on the day the camera arrives.

Can it print photos from my phone?

Yes. Bluetooth 5.4 Low Energy links the camera to the instax mini Evo app on iOS and Android, and Direct Print sends an image from the phone to the camera to be printed on instax mini film.

How many prints do you get per charge?

100 prints approximately from a full charge, according to FUJIFILM. Charging the internal battery takes about 2 to 3 hours over USB Type-C.

How long does one print take?

16 seconds approximately. Selecting instax-Rich Mode, which gives more saturated colour than Natural Mode, adds about 7 seconds to that.

Does the instax mini Evo Cinema record video?

Yes. CINE mode records clips of up to 15 seconds at 600 x 800, and with the 2020 era effect it can also save a 1080 x 1440 version to the card. You can print a frame with a QR code that plays the clip back on a phone.

Does it have 100 lens and film effects?

No. This model uses an Eras Dial with 10 settings from 1930 to 2020, plus an intensity dial and a frame switch. The hundred-combination effect system belongs to the earlier instax mini Evo, not to this camera.

How much storage does it have?

50 still images or roughly 10 video clips in internal memory, plus support for microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards up to 256 GB.

What warranty comes with it?

1 year from Totot on every instax mini Evo Cinema we ship.
