Which iPads work with the Apple Pencil 2nd Generation
Apple Support lists eleven compatible models: iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation), iPad Air (4th and 5th generation) and iPad mini (6th generation). It does not work with iPad Pro M4 or M5, iPad Air M2, M3 or M4, iPad mini A17 Pro, or the standard iPad (10th generation and A16). Those newer iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad mini models take the Apple Pencil Pro, and the standard iPad takes the Apple Pencil (USB-C). To see which iPad you have, open Settings, then General, then About, and read the Model Name.
Magnetic pairing, charging and storage
One side of the barrel is shaped to sit against the magnetic connector on the edge of a compatible iPad. Place it there once and the Pencil pairs over Bluetooth automatically; leave it there and it charges wirelessly. There is no Lightning plug, no adapter and no cap to lose. The same magnet is also the storage solution, so the Pencil stays on the iPad in your bag and is charged when you pick it up. The matte finish gives a steady grip for long sessions of notes or sketching. Apple does not publish a battery capacity or a runtime figure for the Apple Pencil 2nd Generation.
Pressure, tilt and precision for drawing and notes
The Apple Pencil 2nd Generation responds to pressure and tilt. Press harder and a line gets thicker or darker, the way a real pencil or brush behaves; tilt it and drawing apps let you shade with the side of the tip. Pressure is the key difference from the cheaper Apple Pencil (USB-C), which Apple lists without pressure sensitivity. With low latency, ink appears right under the tip, which suits handwritten notes, marking up PDFs and email, sketching, colouring and photo retouching. Apple does not publish pressure levels or a latency figure in milliseconds.
Double-tap and hover
A touch surface on the lower part of the barrel recognises a double-tap, so you can switch from pen to eraser, or between tools you choose, without putting the Pencil down. You set what double-tap does in the iPad Apple Pencil settings, and drawing apps can assign their own actions. Hover works only on certain iPads: Apple names the iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation) and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th generation), the M2 models, among those on this compatibility list. With hover, the iPad previews where the tip will land and the brush size before you touch the glass.
Apple Pencil 2nd Generation or Apple Pencil Pro
The Apple Pencil Pro adds squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback and Find My, but it only works with the newest iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad mini models. The Apple Pencil 2nd Generation has none of those extras, yet it is the right choice for an iPad on its list, because the Pencil Pro will not pair with those older models. The Apple Pencil (USB-C) costs less and works with more iPads, but it lacks pressure sensitivity and double-tap and charges through a cable. In short, choose the Pencil that matches your iPad.
Who This Is Not For
Skip the Apple Pencil 2nd Generation if you own an iPad Pro M4 or M5, an iPad Air M2 or later, the iPad mini A17 Pro or any standard iPad: it will not pair with them. It has no Find My, so a lost Pencil cannot be located on a map, and it has no squeeze, barrel roll or haptic feedback. Hover works only on the M2 iPad Pro models. Apple lists only the Pencil itself in the box, so there is no spare tip. If you just need handwriting without pressure, the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is a cheaper fit.
