The amiibo Corrin is Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. series figure of Corrin, the lead character of Fire Emblem Fates. Nintendo UK lists its European release as 21 July 2017, the same day as the separate Corrin – Player 2 figure. The figure stands on the standard round amiibo base with an NFC chip inside. Tap it on a Nintendo Switch, a Wii U GamePad or a Nintendo 3DS with an amiibo reader and it becomes a fighter in Super Smash Bros. that grows and evolves, or unlocks items, tickets and extras in a long list of other Nintendo games.
Table of Contents
Corrin and Fire Emblem Fates
Corrin is the main character of Fire Emblem Fates on Nintendo 3DS: born into the royal family of Hoshido but raised by the rival kingdom of Nohr, and forced to choose between the two families. Corrin can also take the form of a dragon, and that ability carries over into Super Smash Bros., where several of Corrin’s attacks use dragon transformations. Corrin joined Smash as downloadable content for the Wii U and 3DS games and returned in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which is why this amiibo Corrin belongs to the Super Smash Bros. series line. Nintendo makes two Corrin figures in that line: this one and Corrin – Player 2, sold as separate products.
Training a Fighter in Super Smash Bros.
Nintendo lists the amiibo Corrin as read/write in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Switch, and in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and for Nintendo 3DS. In each, it brings Corrin into the game as a fighter that grows and evolves over time. In Ultimate this is called a Figure Player: a computer-controlled Corrin that fights alongside you or against you, gains experience as it battles, and stores its progress on the figure rather than on the console. That means a trained amiibo Corrin keeps what it has learned when you take it to a friend’s Switch.
Fire Emblem Games
Corrin’s own series gets the most out of the figure. In Fire Emblem Engage on Switch, Nintendo lists the amiibo Corrin as read/write, giving Fashion Tickets and Music Tickets that unlock costumes and music tracks. In Fire Emblem Warriors on Switch and New Nintendo 3DS it gives a strong weapon for that character, and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes reads it for in-game presents or items. On 3DS, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia uses it to summon an Illusory Hero to fight on your side.
Other Compatible Games
Outside Fire Emblem and Smash, the list is long and the rewards are smaller. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom gives weapons and materials, and its Switch 2 Edition gives items and a chest. Super Mario Bros. Wonder gives a power-up on a course, Super Mario Odyssey reveals a Power Moon’s location, and Donkey Kong Bananza gives a giant sphere of a random material. Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Miitopia and Monster Hunter Rise also read it, usually for random items, coins or tickets, and Nintendo notes some games may need an update.
How amiibo Work on Each Console
On Nintendo Switch you hold the figure over the NFC touchpoint on the right Joy-Con control stick or on a Pro Controller; the left Joy-Con has no reader. On Wii U the reader sits on the GamePad, the New Nintendo 3DS family has one built in, and older 3DS and 2DS models need the separate NFC Reader/Writer. The figure has no battery. An amiibo holds save data for one game at a time, so you clear existing data in the console’s amiibo settings before writing data from another read/write game.
Who This Is Not For
Without Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or Fire Emblem Engage, most of the amiibo Corrin’s value is as a display piece, because the bonuses in other games are small random items that many amiibo give. It is not the Corrin – Player 2 figure, which is a separate product. Nintendo does not publish the figure’s height or weight and notes that designs may vary from product photos. The thin sword and cape are better on a shelf than in a young child’s toy box, and the chip has no use without a Switch, Wii U or 3DS.
