Size, build and the black finish
Bose lists the Bose SoundLink Max at 4.73 x 10.42 x 4.13 inches, about 120 x 265 x 105 mm, and 4.9 lb, roughly 2.2 kg. That makes it a speaker you carry to a spot and set down rather than clip to a backpack. The body combines aluminium, steel, silicone, nylon, fabric and plastic, and Bose fits a removable rope handle for carrying. Black is the practical finish for outdoor use: it hides sand, sunscreen marks and scuffs from boat decks far better than lighter colours, and it sits quietly on a terrace or a shelf at home.
Battery life and what changes it
Bose quotes up to 20 hours, and attaches conditions: 65% volume, 20–25°C ambient temperature, default EQ, Bluetooth streaming of a mixed Top 50 playlist, and no device charging from the speaker. Louder playback, summer heat well above 25°C, or a phone plugged into the USB-C port will all shorten that time. A full recharge takes about 5 hours, so it is best charged overnight. The USB-C port works in both directions: it charges the Bose SoundLink Max and can also charge a phone from its battery, although Bose does not publish an output figure for that port.
IP67 and floating are two different things
IP67 means the enclosure is dust-tight and survives accidental immersion in about 1 m of water for up to 30 minutes, per Bose. Floating is a separate promise: if the speaker falls off a boat or into a pool, it stays buoyant so you can fish it out. Bose is clear that the Bose SoundLink Max is not designed to play while wet or while floating, since the front grille sits under water. After contact with salt or chlorinated water, Bose recommends rinsing it with fresh water. In sandy places, the dust-tight half of the rating is just as useful.
Bluetooth 5.4, aptX Adaptive and the AUX input
Bose lists Bluetooth 5.4 with a range of up to 30 ft (about 9 m) and support for two source devices at once, with up to six paired devices remembered. It is a Snapdragon Sound product, so compatible Android phones stream with aptX Adaptive; iPhones use the standard Bluetooth codecs. Google Fast Pair speeds up setup on Android. On the back there is a 3.5 mm AUX jack for a turntable with a built-in preamp, a laptop or a mixer, but Bose does not include the audio cable, so buy one if you plan to use it.
Bose app, Shortcut button and pairing two speakers
The Bose app adjusts bass, mid-range and treble, which helps on hard tiled terraces where bass can boom. The programmable Shortcut button switches by default between Bluetooth and a wired source, and it also links two speakers. Two Bose SoundLink Max units can play as a Stereo pair with separate left and right channels, or in Party Mode where both play the same sound. Who This Is Not For
