The JBL Wave Flex Black are JBL’s open-fit everyday earbuds in their most understated colour: matte black buds in a matte black case that look the same at the gym, on the metro and in a meeting. They sit in the outer ear without silicone tips, use 12mm dynamic drivers tuned for JBL Deep Bass Sound, and offer Smart Ambient so you can hear traffic or a colleague without taking them out. JBL rates them at up to 8 hours in the earbuds and 24 more from the case, and the earbuds themselves are rated IP54 against sweat, splashes and dust.

Why choose black
Black is the safe, invisible choice. The JBL Wave Flex Black do not draw attention in a meeting or a mosque courtyard, and they match dark phone cases, gym wear and office clothes alike. Black also hides the small scuffs a case collects in a pocket with keys, and skin oil and make-up marks show much less on the stems than on white or beige. If you lose earbuds in bags easily, note the flip side: a black case is harder to find at the bottom of a dark backpack. For a lighter, more personal look, JBL also makes the Wave Flex in blue, white, mint and beige.
The open, tip-free fit
Most budget earbuds push a silicone tip into the ear canal. The JBL Wave Flex Black do not. JBL calls the shape stick-open: the bud rests in the outer ear and the stem points down, with no seal and no pressure inside the ear. People who get sore ears from sealed tips after an hour or two usually find this far more comfortable for long workdays. Because there is no seal, bass is naturally lighter than in sealed earbuds, which is why JBL pairs the shape with 12mm drivers and its Deep Bass tuning, and you can adjust the EQ in the JBL Headphones app.
Smart Ambient, TalkThru and VoiceAware
On the JBL Wave Flex Black, Smart Ambient offers two modes. Ambient Aware keeps the music playing while letting outside sound in, useful near roads or when waiting for a boarding call. TalkThru lowers the music and brings voices forward so you can answer a cashier or colleague and carry on listening. On calls, VoiceAware lets you choose how much of your own voice you hear, so you do not end up shouting. JBL lists one microphone in each earbud. There is no active noise cancelling on this model; the open design always lets some surrounding sound in.
Battery and charging
For the JBL Wave Flex Black, JBL quotes up to 8 hours of playback from the earbuds and another 24 hours from the case, for up to 32 hours in total. A full charge from empty takes about 2 hours over USB-C, and a 10-minute speed charge gives about 2 hours of listening. In practice that covers a full working week of commuting for most people before the case needs a cable. JBL does not publish a separate call-time figure on its product page, and real playtime drops at high volume.
IP54 earbuds, IPX2 case
The earbuds of the JBL Wave Flex Black are rated IP54: protected against dust and against splashing water from any direction. That covers sweat at the gym, humid summer evenings and light rain. They are not made for swimming. The charging case is only IPX2, meaning light drips at most, so dry the earbuds before putting them back and keep the case off wet tables. JBL lists 7.6 g for the earbuds and 35.1 g for the case, 42.7 g together, so the whole set disappears into a pocket.
Who This Is Not For
The JBL Wave Flex Black are not for you if you need active noise cancelling on flights or in a loud office: the open fit and lack of ANC let engine noise through. They are not ideal for runners who want a locked-in fit, since there are no tips or wings to hold them. JBL does not list high-resolution codecs such as LDAC or aptX, or multipoint connection to two devices at once. And the case is only IPX2, so it is a poor companion for a beach bag.
