The Marshall Major V Black is the fifth generation of Marshall’s best-known on-ear wireless headphone, in the classic black finish that matches the brand’s guitar amplifiers. Marshall rates it at more than 100 hours of wireless playtime, adds wireless charging and a customisable M-button, and keeps the single control knob and foldable frame of earlier Major models. The Marshall Major V Black is a headphone for people who want long battery life and simple controls rather than noise cancelling.

Marshall Major V Black: The Classic Finish
Black is the original Marshall look, the finish that matches the brand’s guitar amplifiers. It goes with anything you wear and hides scuffs and fingerprints better than the lighter Cream finish, which is why the Marshall Major V Black is the safe choice for daily commuting, the office and travel.
Marshall also makes the Major V in Cream, Brown and Midnight Blue, and all of them share the same drivers, battery and features. Only the colour changes. If you want something less common, we carry those finishes too; if you want the headphone that blends into a work bag and a black jacket, this is the one.
More Than 100 Hours, and Wireless Charging
Marshall rates the Major V at more than 100 hours of wireless playtime. Marshall does not publish the volume or test conditions behind that figure, so expect less at high volume, but even heavy daily listening means charging every week or two rather than every night.
When it does run low, 15 minutes of charging gives about 15 hours of wireless playtime, according to Marshall, and a full charge takes 3 hours over USB-C. The Marshall Major V Black can also charge wirelessly: rest it on a wireless charging pad and it tops up. The pad is not included in the box, only a USB-C cable.
In the Marshall app you can switch on battery preservation, which caps the charge at 90% and regulates charging temperature and speed to slow battery wear over the years.
Sound, Bluetooth and Codecs
Inside each cup is a custom-tuned 40mm dynamic driver with 32 ohm impedance, 106 dB SPL sensitivity (100mV at 1kHz) and a 20 to 20,000 Hz range. Marshall describes the result as its signature sound, and the Marshall app adds an adjustable EQ if you want more bass or less treble.
The Marshall Major V Black uses Bluetooth 5.3 with a range of 10 metres and supports SBC, AAC and LC3. LC3 is the codec of Bluetooth LE Audio; Marshall says the headphone is ready for LE Audio and future Auracast sharing, which depends on updates and on phones that support it.
Multipoint lets it stay connected to two devices, such as a phone and a laptop, and switch between them. A 3.5mm cable is included for wired listening, which also works when the battery is empty.
One Knob and the M-Button
A single multi-directional control knob on the ear cup handles playback and volume, so you can control music by touch without taking out your phone. Marshall’s user manual explains each push and direction in detail.
The M-button is new on the Major V. By default it opens Spotify Tap, and in the Marshall app you can switch it to cycle EQ presets or call your voice assistant. The app also handles firmware updates, and Marshall promises at least two years of software support.
Marshall Major V Black or Major IV?
The Major IV is the previous generation, rated at more than 80 hours of playtime with wireless charging and a 165g frame. The Marshall Major V Black adds more than 20 hours of rated playtime, multipoint, the M-button, app support and LE Audio readiness. It weighs 186g, a little more than the Major IV.
If you mostly listen to one device and want the lightest headphone, the Major IV still makes sense. If you switch between a phone and a laptop, or want app EQ and the longest battery, choose the Major V.
Who This Is Not For
Not for people who need noise cancelling. The Major V has no active noise cancellation, so on a plane or a noisy metro it relies on the on-ear seal only.
Not for the gym or the rain. Marshall states that the Major V is not water-resistant and has no IP rating.
Not for listeners who find on-ear headphones tiring. On-ear cups press on the ear rather than around it, and some people, especially glasses wearers, prefer over-ear models for long sessions.
Not a complete wireless charging kit. The charging pad is sold separately.
