HyperX Cloud III Gaming Headset Black: design and comfort
Everything is black: the aluminium frame, the cups, the leatherette cushions and the cable. There is no coloured stitching or accent, so the HyperX Cloud III Gaming Headset Black looks at home on a stream, in an office video call or on a console setup in the living room.
Comfort comes from memory foam wrapped in leatherette on both the cushions and the headband. HyperX lists the weight at 308g without the mic and 320g with it, according to its launch announcement. That is mid-weight for a full-size closed-back headset, and the aluminium frame flexes slightly rather than creaking.
Angled 53mm drivers and DTS Headphone:X
The 53mm dynamic drivers with neodymium magnets in the HyperX Cloud III Gaming Headset Black are angled towards the ear canal, which HyperX says improves the way sound reaches you. The quoted frequency response is 10Hz to 21kHz, with 100dB SPL/mW sensitivity at 1kHz and less than 2% distortion.
HyperX includes lifetime activation of DTS Headphone:X spatial audio. It is a software feature set up on PC, and HyperX’s product page does not describe console support for it, so on PS5 or Xbox expect regular stereo or the console’s own 3D audio.
The 10mm microphone and LED mute
The detachable microphone uses a 10mm electret condenser capsule with a uni-directional, noise-cancelling pattern and a built-in mesh filter that softens plosives. HyperX lists its sensitivity at -42dBV. Unplug it completely when you use the headset for music or travel.
An LED on the mic shows when you are muted, which removes the classic mistake of talking to your team while muted. HyperX also lists onboard audio controls for volume and mic mute, so you do not need to open a menu mid-game.
Three ways to connect
The HyperX Cloud III Gaming Headset Black plugs into a 3.5mm jack directly, which works with a PS5 or Xbox controller, a Switch, a phone or a laptop. For PC, the USB dongle connects through USB-C, and the included USB-C to USB-A adapter covers older computers and consoles. The headset cable is about 1.2m and the USB dongle cable about 1.3m (3.93ft and 4.26ft in HyperX’s specs).

Who This Is Not For
This is the wired Cloud III. If you want to move away from the desk or connect over Bluetooth, look at the HyperX Cloud III S Wireless instead, which is a different model. Leatherette cushions get warm in a hot room during long sessions. DTS spatial audio is a PC feature, so console-only players will not use it. And at 320g with the mic, it is heavier than lightweight esports headsets.
