The Apple AirTag 2nd Gen is a single round tracker for your keys, bag or suitcase. You register it to your Apple Account from an iPhone, attach it to an item, and then see where that item is in the Find My app. Inside, Apple has fitted its second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which gives up to 1.5 times the Precision Finding range of the first AirTag, and a speaker that is 50% louder, so Apple says you can hear it from up to twice as far away. This listing is one AirTag; the four-pack is sold separately.

Table of Contents
What changed from the first AirTag
From the outside, the Apple AirTag 2nd Gen keeps the familiar disc: 31.9 mm across, 8.0 mm high and 11.8 g. The changes sit inside. Apple uses its second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which extends Precision Finding range by up to 1.5 times compared with the previous generation, and a louder built-in speaker. Precision Finding also works from the wrist now: Apple lists Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, running watchOS 26.2.1. Availability of these features varies by region, according to Apple. If you already own first-generation AirTags, they keep working in the same Find My app next to the new one.

Precision Finding: which iPhones get the longer range
Precision Finding shows an arrow and the distance on your iPhone screen and walks you to the exact spot. Apple’s footnote says the expanded range applies when the Apple AirTag 2nd Gen is paired with iPhone Air or iPhone 15 or later, excluding iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e. With an older iPhone, the tracker still appears in Find My and can play its sound, but you do not get the on-screen arrow. Setup needs an iPhone with iOS 26.0 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 26.0 or later, and an Apple Account. Apple does not publish the Precision Finding range in metres, only the 1.5x comparison.

The Find My network and the louder speaker
When your item is out of your own Bluetooth range, Apple says the Apple AirTag 2nd Gen can use more than a billion iPhone, iPad and Mac devices in the Find My network to report its location back to you, while keeping that location private. If something is lost, you can switch on Lost Mode, and anyone who finds it can tap it with an NFC-capable phone to see your message. The speaker matters most for everyday searches, such as keys under a sofa cushion or a bag in another room. Apple says it is 50% louder than before and can be heard from up to twice as far away.

Battery, IP67 and materials
Power comes from a standard CR2032 coin cell that you can replace yourself, and it ships installed. Apple says the tracker works for more than a year on one battery, based on its own testing of pre-production units with average use in December 2025; how often it plays sounds or runs Precision Finding will change that figure. The Apple AirTag 2nd Gen is rated IP67 under IEC 60529, which Apple defines as a maximum depth of 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. That covers rain and a splash in the sink, not swimming. Inside there is an accelerometer, and Apple states the enclosure uses 85% recycled plastic.

Privacy and unwanted tracking alerts
Apple built the Find My network so that location data stays end-to-end private. If an AirTag that belongs to someone else is moving with you, your iPhone notices and alerts you, and it can play a sound to help you find it. This protection works both ways: it guards you against being followed, and it makes clear that the Apple AirTag 2nd Gen is designed for finding your own belongings, such as keys, wallets, luggage and backpacks, not for keeping track of people.

Who This Is Not For
The Apple AirTag 2nd Gen is not for Android users: setup and tracking need an iPhone or iPad on iOS or iPadOS 26.0 or later. It is a weaker choice if your iPhone is older than iPhone 15, or is an iPhone 16e or 17e, because you lose Precision Finding directions. The AirTag has no hole or loop, and the box holds only the tracker and documentation, so you need a holder, keyring or case to attach it. If you plan to tag four items, the four-pack is better value than buying singles.
