The CMF Buds Neo Black are the all-black version of CMF by Nothing’s budget noise-cancelling earbuds, and the colour that goes with everything: gym kit, office shirts, a black phone case. Beyond looks, Black is the practical choice for training, because sweat marks and grime from a gym bag barely show on it. The earbuds carry an IP54 rating against sweat and splashes, Nothing rates the ANC at up to 35dB, and the Nothing X app gives you five EQ presets, a Custom EQ and adjustable Bass Enhancement. Battery life reaches up to 52 hours with the case with ANC off.

A black finish that stays clean
The CMF Buds Neo Black have a plastic housing that Nothing describes as tough and resistant to sun exposure, with silicone ear tips and stainless steel hinges on the case. Black is the colour least likely to look worn: it hides the grey smudges that build up on light cases and the small scuffs from a gym locker. The one thing it does show is dust and lint, which a quick wipe with a dry cloth removes. The case knob has a lanyard hole, handy for clipping the CMF Buds Neo Black to a gym bag so they do not end up at the bottom under a towel.
Built for workouts: IP54 and fit
Nothing rates the CMF Buds Neo Black at IP54 under IEC 60529: level 5 against dust and level 4 against splashing water, which covers sweat during a run or a gym session and light rain. It does not cover swimming, showers or water sports, and the charging case is not waterproof at all. Nothing advises wiping the CMF Buds Neo Black with a dry, lint-free cloth after a workout before putting them back in the case, without heat or compressed air, and notes that liquid damage is not covered by warranty. Silicone ear tips seal the ear canal, which helps both the bass and the noise cancellation stay consistent while you move.
Tuning the sound in Nothing X
The Nothing X app is where the CMF Buds Neo Black get their character. There are five presets, Pop, Rock, Electronic, Enhance Vocals and Classical, and a Custom EQ for your own curve. Bass Enhancement detects low frequencies as music plays and boosts them on the fly, with a strength you can adjust, which suits gym playlists. Spatial Audio uses an HRTF model to give a wider, more surrounding sound that works with most content. The CMF Buds Neo Black use AAC and SBC over Bluetooth 5.4, so iPhones get AAC and most Android phones can use it too.
Who the Black suits
The CMF Buds Neo Black are for anyone who wants earbuds that never clash with an outfit and never look dirty: gym regulars, runners, people who carry them in a work bag every day, and anyone buying a gift without knowing the person’s taste. Black is also the most discreet colour in the ear at the office. If you would like something a little different but still dark, the Dark Blue version is the alternative; if you want the case to be easy to spot in a bag, White is the better choice.
The rest, in brief
On the CMF Buds Neo Black, ANC reaches up to 35dB with Adaptive and Transparency modes; holding the touch area for one second switches between them. Battery: up to 11 hours from the earbuds and 52 hours with the case with ANC off, or 8 and 30 hours with ANC on (Nothing lab tests, AAC at 50% volume). Ten minutes of charging gives about 3 hours from the earbuds alone. Dual connection is supported, and Nothing lists Android 6.0 and above and iOS 13 and above.
Who This Is Not For
The CMF Buds Neo Black are not for swimmers or anyone who wants to use earbuds in the shower: IP54 covers sweat and splashes only, and the case has no water resistance. They have no LDAC or LE Audio, only AAC and SBC, and the case does not support wireless charging. With ANC on, total battery life drops from 52 to 30 hours, and 35dB of cancellation reduces engine noise far more than voices.
