Description

The Shokz OpenDots 2 Black are clip-on earbuds that sit on the outside of the ear instead of inside it, so you hear your music and the street around you at the same time. Shokz launched them in June 2026 with dual 11.8 mm drivers in its Bassphere 2.0 system, upgraded Dolby Audio, three microphones for calls and up to 40 hours of listening with the case. This page sets out what Shokz publishes, and where an open design gives ground.

Shokz OpenDots 2 Black: how the clip-on design works

Each earbud wraps around the edge of the ear like a cuff, with the speaker resting in front of the ear canal rather than sealing it. Nothing presses into the canal, which is why clip-on designs suit people who find normal earbuds uncomfortable after an hour. Each earbud weighs 6.4 g (± 0.2 g), and the case weighs 38.8 g.

In black, the Shokz OpenDots 2 are the least conspicuous way to wear a visible earbud: on dark hair or with sunglasses they almost disappear, and they do not show the scuffs that pale finishes collect in a bag. Shokz also sells them in Pearl White, Grey and Pink.

Bassphere 2.0 and upgraded Dolby Audio

Open earbuds usually struggle with bass because nothing seals the sound in. Shokz answers with Bassphere 2.0, a spherical acoustic system with two custom 11.8 mm drivers per side and a redesigned diaphragm that Shokz says reduces distortion. MirrorPitch and DirectPitch direct the sound more precisely into the ear.

Upgraded Dolby Audio adds, in Shokz’s words, enhanced bass, clear vocals and a more spacious soundstage. The Shokz app offers EQ modes named Standard, Bass, Vocal and Private, plus a custom equaliser.

Sound leakage and awareness: the honest trade-off

Because the ear is left open, you stay aware of traffic, announcements and colleagues, which is the point of the Shokz OpenDots 2. The flip side is that some sound escapes. DirectPitch uses reverse sound waves to reduce that leakage, and the Private EQ mode is meant for quiet rooms, but no open design is silent to the person beside you at high volume in a quiet lift or office.

The same openness means there is no noise isolation and no active noise cancellation. On a plane, in a loud mall or on a noisy metro, you will turn the volume up to compete with the surroundings rather than block them out.

Three microphones for calls

The Shokz OpenDots 2 use a triple AI noise-cancelling microphone system: two air-conduction microphones and one bone conduction microphone. On the Shokz OpenDots 2, the bone conduction mic picks up your voice through vibration, which helps separate it from wind and background noise on a busy street.

Battery, quick charge and wireless charging

Shokz rates the Shokz OpenDots 2 earbuds at 10 hours per charge and up to 40 hours in total with the case, measured with SBC audio at 50% volume and other features at default settings. Louder listening or other codecs will change that.

A 5-minute charge gives 2 hours of playback. Over USB-C, the earbuds charge in 1 hour and the case in 2 hours. The case also charges wirelessly, which takes 4 hours, and Shokz notes that quick charge is not supported on wireless charging.

Controls, pairing and water resistance

Controls combine taps with upgraded force-sensor pinch gestures, customisable in the Shokz app. Bluetooth is version 6.1, with MultiPoint for two devices at once, Google Fast Pair, Microsoft Swift Pair and Dynamic Ear Detection. The app also covers Find My Earbuds and battery status.

The Shokz OpenDots 2 earbuds are rated IP57 for sweat, rain and dust; the charging case is rated lower, at IP54 in Shokz’s launch announcement, so keep the case dry. Against the OpenDots Air, Shokz lists 40 versus 36 hours, IP57 versus IP55, three microphones versus two and wireless charging; see our Shokz OpenDots Air Black and Shokz OpenDots ONE Black pages for the other models.

Who This Is Not For

Commuters and flyers who want silence: open-ear earbuds do not isolate and have no ANC, so noisy places mean higher volume. People who listen loudly in quiet shared spaces, since some sound leaks despite DirectPitch. Listeners who want a sealed, deep sub-bass feel will find in-ear models deliver more of it.

Shokz does not publish supported codecs or frequency response on its product page, so anyone choosing earbuds for LDAC or hi-res playback has nothing to go on here. The case is not as water-resistant as the earbuds.

FAQ

Do the Shokz OpenDots 2 leak sound?

Yes, somewhat. DirectPitch reduces leakage and there is a Private EQ mode, but an open-ear design can still be heard by someone close by in a quiet room at high volume.

Do the Shokz OpenDots 2 have noise cancelling?

No. There is no ANC and no isolation, because the ear stays open. The AI noise cancelling applies to the microphones on calls.

How long does the battery last?

10 hours per charge and up to 40 hours with the case, measured by Shokz with SBC audio at 50% volume.

Can I wear them in the rain or at the gym?

Yes. The earbuds are rated IP57; keep the charging case dry, as it carries a lower rating.

Does the case charge wirelessly?

Yes. Wireless charging takes about 4 hours; quick charge works only over USB-C.

Can they connect to a phone and laptop at once?

Yes. MultiPoint connects two devices at the same time.

Which codecs do they support?

Shokz does not list codecs on the OpenDots 2 product page; battery figures are quoted with SBC.
