The WH-1000XX Platinum is the pale, warm-toned version of Sony’s 1000X THE COLLEXION, the premium model Sony sells above its regular 1000X noise-cancelling range. Sony builds it from metal and soft faux leather, fits a bespoke 30 mm driver that it co-tuned with mastering engineers, and gives it adaptive noise cancelling, LDAC and LE Audio. Sony rates the battery at up to 24 hours of music with noise cancelling on and up to 32 hours with it off. Platinum is one of only two colours; the other is Black.

What the Platinum finish looks like
Platinum is a soft off-white with a slight warm tint, paired with metal parts that read as light silver rather than chrome. Against a dark coat, a black laptop bag or an airport lounge it stands out, which is part of the appeal: the WH-1000XX Platinum looks like an accessory chosen on purpose rather than a work tool. It suits light outfits, linen and summer clothing especially well, and sits naturally next to silver laptops and white phones. If you prefer headphones that disappear into the background, the Black version is the quieter choice.
Living with a light colour
A pale finish needs a little more care than black. Faux leather in a light shade can pick up colour from dark denim, hair products and make-up over time, so wipe the earpads and headband with a soft, slightly damp cloth now and then and let them dry before storing. Keeping the WH-1000XX Platinum in the supplied carrying case between uses protects it from bag dust and pen marks. Owners who travel often or wear a lot of make-up may find Black easier to keep looking new, while those who like a clean, bright look usually accept the small extra effort.
The bespoke driver and how it sounds
Sony describes the driver in the WH-1000XX Platinum as bespoke, co-created with mastering engineers to give a spacious soundstage. The published figures are a 30 mm driver, 48 ohm impedance and 103 dB/mW sensitivity when used through the cable with the headphones switched on, with a wired frequency response of 4 Hz to 40,000 Hz. Over Bluetooth, Sony lists 20 Hz to 40,000 Hz with LDAC at 96 kHz and 990 kbps. DSEE Ultimate upscales compressed streams, and 360 Upmix spreads ordinary stereo across a wider space for music, cinema and games.
Noise cancelling and calls
Noise cancelling on the WH-1000XX Platinum adapts in real time through Sony’s Adaptive NC Optimizer, and Sony adds atmospheric pressure optimising, which helps on flights. Ambient sound mode, automatic ambient sound and Quick Attention let you hear announcements without removing the headphones. For calls, Sony uses AI beamforming and voice isolation run by its Integrated Processor V3, and you can mute the microphone instantly from the headphones. Sony does not publish the number of microphones on its specification page, so we do not quote one here.
Bluetooth 6.0, codecs and multipoint
The WH-1000XX Platinum uses Bluetooth 6.0 with a range of about 10 m. Sony lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 codecs, plus the TMAP, PBP and GMAP profiles used by LE Audio. LDAC needs an Android phone that supports it; on an iPhone the headphones use AAC. Multipoint lets the headphones stay connected to two devices, such as a laptop and a phone, so a call can come through on either without re-pairing.
Battery and wired listening
Sony rates the WH-1000XX Platinum at up to 24 hours of music with noise cancelling on and up to 32 hours with it off, and up to 16 or 20 hours of talk time respectively. A full charge takes about 3.5 hours over USB. Sony does not publish a quick-charge figure for this model. The box includes a detachable 1.2 m cable with a gold-plated L-shaped mini plug, so you can connect to in-flight entertainment or a computer when the battery runs low. The headphones weigh about 320 g.
Who This Is Not For
The WH-1000XX Platinum is not for anyone who wants a light, travel-first pair: at about 320 g it is heavier than many noise-cancelling headphones. The light faux leather needs regular wiping to stay clean. Sony does not include a power adapter and does not publish a quick-charge figure for this model. LDAC is not available on iPhone, and Sony lists no water or sweat rating, so it is not a gym pair.
