The Fitbit Air Obsidian is Google’s screenless activity tracker in its darkest finish: a black woven Performance Loop band closed by a matte black stainless steel buckle, with the small black tracker pebble sitting against your wrist. Google rates it for up to 7 days per charge and water resistance to 50 m, and the whole set weighs 12 g, so it is made to stay on day and night while you read everything it records on your phone.

Fitbit Air Obsidian: Black Band, Matte Black Buckle
Obsidian is the all-black option among Google’s four standard Fitbit Air colours. The band is a dark charcoal-black textile with a fine woven texture, and where Berry gets a champagne gold buckle and Fog and Lavender get polished silver, this one is matte black, so nothing on the strap catches the light. From a metre away the Fitbit Air Obsidian looks like a plain black strap rather than a gadget.
The strap is Google’s Performance Loop, made from recycled polyester and elastane yarn with a recycled stainless steel buckle. It is one size for wrists 130–210 mm around and micro-adjustable: you pull the loop through the buckle and press it down at the tension you want, which makes it easy to wear slightly tighter at night and a little looser at your desk.
Why Pick Obsidian Over the Lighter Colours
Black is the low-maintenance choice. Sweat, sunscreen, dust from an outdoor run or a smudge of ink leave marks that stand out on pale textiles, and they are much harder to see on the Fitbit Air Obsidian. If your tracker is going to live on your wrist through gym sessions, beach weekends and long working days, this is the colour that will still look tidy months later.
It also goes with the widest range of clothes and settings: a dark suit sleeve, a black abaya cuff, a work uniform or gym kit. Because the buckle is matte rather than polished, it does not clash with a silver or gold watch on the other wrist or with rings and bracelets. And at night a black strap is the least noticeable thing to sleep in.
Google recommends giving your wrist a rest by taking the band off every now and then, and that is also the moment to rinse a sweaty loop with plain water and let it dry. If you later fancy a brighter look, the pebble presses out of the loop and Google’s other Fitbit Air bands switch over in seconds.
What the Fitbit Air Obsidian Tracks Without Paying
Google’s base features need only the free Google Health app. They cover activity (steps, calories, distance, Cardio load and Readiness), sleep (Sleep Score, sleep schedule, sleep duration and sleep stages) and heart and breathing data (heart rate, heart rate variability, breathing rate and blood oxygen, SpO2).
Inside the Fitbit Air Obsidian are an optical heart rate monitor, a 3-axis accelerometer with gyroscope, red and infrared sensors for SpO2, a device temperature sensor and a vibration motor. Google also says the tracker follows your heart rhythm while you are still or asleep and looks for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib). Google switches health notifications on country by country, so check what the Google Health app offers on your account in the UAE.
Optical sensors read best when the pebble sits snug on the top of the wrist and does not slide around. The loop design helps, because you can tighten it by a few millimetres instead of jumping a whole buckle hole.
Living With a Screenless Tracker
There is no display at all. You cannot check the time, a message or your step count on the Fitbit Air Obsidian; every number is read in the Google Health app after the tracker syncs over Bluetooth 5.0, with a range of up to 30 ft (about 9 m). Google’s idea is fewer glances and fewer interruptions. The trade-off is that you need your phone for every reading.
When the phone is out of range, the tracker keeps recording: it holds 7 days of minute-by-minute motion data, daily totals for 30 days, and heart rate at 2-second intervals until the next sync. The pebble measures 34.9 × 17 × 8.3 mm, weighs 5.2 g on its own and is made from recycled polycarbonate and PBT plastics.
Premium Coaching and the UAE
Google Health Premium adds the Google Health Coach, built with Gemini, plus personalised weekly fitness plans and workouts and personalised sleep summaries. Google includes three months of Premium with a new Fitbit Air, and you must be over 18 to enrol.
For buyers in the Emirates the key point is this: Google’s published list of countries where Google Health Premium is available does not include the UAE. Buy the Fitbit Air Obsidian for its free tracking, and treat coaching as an extra that your account may not be able to activate here.
Battery, Charging and Water Resistance
Google quotes battery life of up to 7 days from the lithium-polymer cell; what you actually get depends on your settings and use. A full charge from 0 to 100% takes about 90 minutes, and a 5-minute top-up gives about one day. The box includes a USB-C charging cable but no wall adapter.
The tracker is water resistant up to 50 metres. It works with Android 11 or newer and iOS 16.4 or newer, and needs a Google Account and the Google Health app; syncing also asks for Bluetooth LE, internet and location permissions on the phone.
Who This Is Not For
Skip the Fitbit Air Obsidian if you want to see the time or notifications on your wrist, because there is no screen. It is not a GPS device either: Google does not list built-in GPS, so mapping a run needs your phone with you. If the Gemini-built coach is the main reason you are buying, remember that Google does not list the UAE for Premium. And if you want a band that gets noticed, this one is deliberately quiet; Berry is the bolder pick.

FAQ
Does the Fitbit Air Obsidian have a black buckle?
Yes, a matte black stainless steel buckle. Berry uses champagne gold, while Fog and Lavender use polished silver.
Will the black band show sweat or sunscreen marks?
No, not nearly as readily as the pale colours. Rinsing the loop with plain water after a heavy workout is still a good habit.
Can I sleep with the Fitbit Air Obsidian on?
Yes. It weighs 12 g with the band and has no screen to light up, and Sleep Score and sleep stages are part of the free features.
Does the Fitbit Air Obsidian show the time?
No. There is no display; your data is read in the Google Health app on your phone.
Does it work with an iPhone?
Yes, with iOS 16.4 or newer, as well as Android 11 or newer, through the Google Health app.
Is Google Health Premium available in the UAE?
No. The UAE is not on Google’s published country list for Google Health Premium; the free tracking features do not depend on it.
How long does the battery last?
7 days at most by Google’s figure, and a 5-minute charge gives about one day.
Can I change to another band colour later?
Yes. The pebble presses out of the loop, so any Fitbit Air band from Google fits the same tracker.
