4K30, 2.7K60 and simple controls
GoPro lists 4K30 (and 4K25), 1080p30, and 2.7K60 and 1080p60 for 2x slow motion on the GoPro HERO. In 4:3 the full 165-degree lens gives a 25% taller field of view, useful for helmet and first-person shots; a 16:9 SuperView crop is available later in the Quik app. Photos are 12MP, and 8MP stills can be pulled from 4K video in Quik. The camera is controlled with one button and the touch LCD, so there are few menus to learn.
Stabilisation happens in the app
This is the main difference from GoPro’s Black models. HyperSmooth is applied automatically in the Quik app when you import footage, not in the camera. What you see on the camera’s own display is not stabilised. In practice, clips look steady once they are on your phone through Quik, but if you copy files straight to a computer without the app, they will look shakier than a HERO13 Black clip. Keep that in mind if you edit on a PC.
Small, light and easy to mount
At 86 g the GoPro HERO is light enough for a child’s helmet, a bike handlebar or a backpack strap without weighing it down. The mounting fingers are built into the body, so it attaches directly to GoPro mounts, and GoPro says it works with more than 35 of its mounts and accessories. The lens cover repels water and can be replaced if sand or rocks scratch it, which is useful on UAE beaches and wadi trips.
Waterproof to 5 m, not 10
GoPro rates the GoPro HERO as rugged and waterproof to 5 m (16 ft). That covers pools, splash parks, beach play, kayaking and rain, but it is half the depth of the HERO13 Black and HERO12 Black, which reach 10 m. For snorkelling at depth or diving, a HERO Black model with a protective housing is the better tool. Rinse the camera with fresh water after the sea and dry it before charging.
Battery and recording time
The battery is built in and uses GoPro’s Enduro technology, which GoPro says improves cold-weather performance and runtime in moderate temperatures. GoPro quotes up to 100 minutes of continuous recording at the highest video setting on one charge, tested at 25 °C. Because the battery cannot be swapped, recharge it over USB-C between sessions; a power bank in your bag is the easiest way to extend a long day out.
Who This Is Not For
The GoPro HERO is not for divers or deep snorkelling: it is waterproof to 5 m only. It does not stabilise footage in the camera, so editors who skip the Quik app get shaky clips. There is no 5.3K, no 4K60 and no high-frame-rate 4K. The battery is built in and cannot be swapped. It is not a low-light camera either. Buyers who want front and rear screens, in-camera HyperSmooth and 10 m waterproofing should look at the HERO12 Black or HERO13 Black.
