Why the black finish
Black is the colour you never have to think about. The JBL Live Free NC+ Black match a dark suit, a black phone, a laptop bag and gym kit alike, and nobody notices them during a video call. Matte black hides pocket scuffs, ear-wax marks on the stems and fingerprints on the case far better than white, so the set still looks new after months of daily use. It is also the most unisex choice if the earbuds might be shared in a household or given as a gift. The only real downside is practical: a black case is harder to find in a dark bag, so give it its own pocket.
Noise cancelling for travel and commuting
Active noise cancelling in the JBL Live Free NC+ Black lowers the steady drone of aircraft cabins, buses and air conditioning, which is where ANC works best. Smart Ambient adds two modes for when you need the outside world: TalkThru lowers the music and lets speech through so you can answer a flight attendant or a colleague, and Ambient Aware mixes surrounding sound in while music keeps playing, useful at a station or walking near traffic. Turning ANC on reduces playtime from 7 to 6 hours per charge. Like any ANC earbud, it softens nearby voices rather than removing them.
Sound and fit
Each earbud holds a 6.8 mm dynamic driver with a 20 Hz to 20 kHz response, 16-ohm impedance and 96 dB sensitivity. JBL Signature Sound leans towards bass with clear vocals, a good match for podcasts on the commute, pop and hip-hop. The JBL Headphones app lets you adjust the sound. The seal decides both bass and noise cancelling, so try the three ear-tip sizes and two gel-sleeve sizes JBL provides until outside sound drops clearly. A tip that is too small makes the earbuds sound thin and weakens ANC.
Battery and Qi wireless charging
For the JBL Live Free NC+ Black, JBL quotes up to 7 hours per charge with ANC off and 6 hours with it on, with the case adding 14 hours for up to 21 hours in total. A full charge over USB-C takes about 2 hours from empty. Speed Charge is supported, though JBL does not publish how much playtime a short top-up gives. If you already charge your phone on a Qi pad at home or on the desk, the case of the JBL Live Free NC+ Black charges on it too, without a cable; the pad is not in the box.
Connection and controls
The JBL Live Free NC+ Black use Bluetooth 5.1. With Dual Connect + Sync, either earbud works on its own or both together, so one can charge while the other covers a long call. Android phones with Google Fast Pair show a pairing prompt as soon as you open the case; iPhone pairs through the normal Bluetooth menu. Touch controls handle playback, calls and the voice assistant, with Hey Google on Android or Amazon Alexa. The IPX7 rating covers sweat, rain and brief immersion of the earbuds; the case has no water rating.
Who This Is Not For
The JBL Live Free NC+ Black are not for anyone who wants the longest battery life: 6 hours per charge with ANC on is behind newer earbuds. Bluetooth 5.1 is an older version, and JBL lists no high-resolution codec such as LDAC or aptX. The case is not water-resistant even though the buds are IPX7, so dry the buds before putting them back, and IPX7 does not cover dust or swimming. If you want earbuds that stand out as an accessory, the Rose or Blue versions suit that better.
